Protect + Prevent
The Protect + Prevent range from Glo Skin Beauty brings together SPF formulations and antioxidant products selected by The London Road Clinic, Newark, for daily photoprotection and environmental defence. UV exposure is the single largest driver of premature skin ageing — responsible for an estimated 80% of visible changes in skin quality over time — and is also the primary trigger for melanin stimulation in pigmentation-prone skin.
Sun protection is not a seasonal product. UV radiation — particularly UVA, which causes photoageing — passes through cloud cover and glass year-round. In the UK, where overcast conditions create a false sense of low UV risk, consistent daily SPF use is particularly important. The products in this range are formulated for daily use in all weathers, with textures appropriate for morning wear under or instead of makeup.
Beyond UV, environmental aggressors including pollution, blue light, and ozone deplete antioxidant reserves in the skin and generate free radical damage that accelerates cellular ageing. The antioxidant formulations in this range — including vitamin C, vitamin E, and ferulic acid — replenish these reserves and provide a secondary layer of protection that SPF alone does not offer.
At London Road Clinic, SPF and antioxidant use are recommended to every patient without exception. Following laser, peel, microneedling, or pigmentation treatments, protecting the skin from UV is essential — sun exposure immediately after these treatments significantly increases the risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and undoes the benefit of the procedure.
What SPF factor should I use every day?
SPF 30 filters approximately 97% of UVB rays; SPF 50 filters approximately 98%. The difference is smaller than most people expect — the more important factor is consistent daily application at adequate quantity. For patients with pigmentation, post-treatment skin, or photosensitising actives in their routine, SPF 50 is recommended.
Can I use SPF as my moisturiser?
Many SPF formulations are designed to double as a moisturiser or primer, making them practical for daily morning use. Apply SPF as the final step of your morning skincare routine, before makeup. A single morning application does not provide all-day protection — reapply during prolonged outdoor exposure.
Is SPF important after aesthetic treatments?
It is critical. Most aesthetic treatments temporarily sensitise the skin to UV radiation and melanin stimulation. Failing to use adequate SPF in the weeks following treatment significantly increases the risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, particularly in patients with Fitzpatrick skin types III and above. Your clinician will specify the post-treatment SPF protocol.
