Clarify + Balance

The Clarify + Balance range from Glo Skin Beauty brings together professional-grade formulations for oily, combination, and acne-prone skin. Selected by The London Road Clinic, Newark, these products address excess sebum production, congested pores, and bacterial triggers without stripping or disrupting the skin barrier — a common mistake in managing oily and blemish-prone skin.

Acne-prone skin is frequently over-dried. The conventional response to oiliness — strong astringents, alcohol-based toners, and drying cleansers — triggers compensatory sebum production and barrier disruption, making the underlying problem worse. The clinical approach is more targeted: use specific actives that address sebum and bacteria at source while maintaining barrier integrity.

The key actives in this range include salicylic acid (BHA), which is oil-soluble and penetrates the pore lining to clear congestion from within; niacinamide, which regulates sebum production and reduces the appearance of enlarged pores; and mandelic acid, a gentle AHA with antibacterial properties that suits darker skin tones better than glycolic acid.

These formulations include prebiotics and skin-identical lipids that support the skin microbiome — now understood to be a contributing factor in inflammatory acne. A well-formulated blemish product maintains the healthy bacterial environment while targeting the triggers of congestion and inflammation.

What causes oily skin and enlarged pores?

Sebum production is primarily driven by genetics, hormonal activity (particularly androgens), and environmental factors. Pores do not open and close — their appearance is determined by the amount of sebum and debris within them. Regular use of BHA exfoliants and niacinamide reduces visible pore size by keeping them clear and minimising sebum output.

Can oily skin be dehydrated?

Yes — this is one of the most common misconceptions in skincare. Oil and water are independent systems. Oily skin can be dehydrated if the barrier is compromised by over-drying cleansers and alcohol-based products. Hydrating with lightweight, oil-free formulations can actually reduce oiliness over time.

Is salicylic acid suitable for daily use?

At concentrations of 0.5% to 2%, salicylic acid is safe for daily use in most oily and acne-prone skin types. Start with every other day if your skin is reactive, and always use SPF alongside as BHA exfoliants increase photosensitivity.
