Hydrate + Restore

The Hydrate + Restore range from Glo Skin Beauty brings together formulations that address skin dehydration at multiple levels — from the surface to the deeper dermal layers. Selected by The London Road Clinic, Newark, these products are used across all skin types: dehydration is not a skin type but a skin condition, and every skin — including oily skin — can experience it.

Skin hydration depends on two things: the water content of the skin cells themselves, and the integrity of the barrier that prevents water from evaporating. Transepidermal water loss (TEWL) is the primary mechanism of dehydration — when the barrier is compromised, water escapes from the skin faster than it is replenished. The most effective hydrating formulations address both factors simultaneously.

The active ingredients in this range include hyaluronic acid at multiple molecular weights — smaller molecules penetrate deeper into the dermis to hydrate from within, while larger molecules sit at the surface and draw moisture from the environment; ceramides, which restore the lipid structure of the barrier; and glycerin, a humectant that holds water in the skin without provoking barrier disruption.

These formulations are appropriate for all skin types, including post-treatment skin. After laser, peels, or microneedling, the skin's barrier function is temporarily impaired and TEWL increases sharply. Targeted hydration during the recovery period reduces discomfort, supports healing, and minimises post-treatment dryness and flaking.

What is the difference between dry and dehydrated skin?

Dry skin is a skin type — it produces less sebum than normal and feels tight and rough. Dehydrated skin is a condition — it lacks water content and can occur in any skin type, including oily skin. Dry skin needs oil-based emollients and barrier lipids. Dehydrated skin needs humectants such as hyaluronic acid and glycerin. Many people have both simultaneously.

How often should I use a hydrating serum?

A hydrating serum can be used morning and evening as part of a daily routine. Apply to damp skin immediately after cleansing to maximise uptake, then follow with a moisturiser to seal the hydration in. Skipping the moisturiser layer reduces the effectiveness of hyaluronic acid, which will draw water from deeper in the skin if nothing seals it.

Is hyaluronic acid safe for sensitive skin?

Yes — hyaluronic acid is one of the most universally well-tolerated skincare ingredients. It is naturally present in the body and does not typically cause irritation. Choose fragrance-free formulations if your skin is reactive, and apply to slightly damp skin for best results.
